In a groundbreaking moment for both the UAE and the world of space exploration, Noora AlMatrooshi, the first Emirati female astronaut, is setting her sights on one of humanity's greatest achievements: planting the UAE flag on the moon. During a talk with students at the American Academy for Girls in Dubai, AlMatrooshi expressed her ambitious vision, saying, "I hope to one day be the astronaut who will plant the UAE flag on the moon."

Shattering Gender Barriers in Space Exploration

AlMatrooshi’s words are not just a testament to her personal dreams but a bold message to young Emiratis, especially girls, that space exploration is no longer a domain limited to men. In her conversation with the students, she emphasized the growing role of women in the space industry and encouraged them to pursue careers in this exciting field.

While her journey is extraordinary, AlMatrooshi's mission goes beyond just reaching the moon. She also has her sights set on Mars, with a goal of contributing to future missions to the Red Planet. Her training includes studying geology, helping astronauts identify rock samples that could unlock crucial insights into Mars’ history.

Inspiring Future Generations

One of AlMatrooshi’s core messages is the importance of hard work, commitment, and serving one’s country. "The impact I want to leave on girls is to motivate them to engage with the UAE space programme and different initiatives offered by the country. I want them to know that our leaders and our country provide them with the opportunities they need. They must be prepared for these opportunities; work hard, stay committed, and serve their country in all fields,” she said.

AlMatrooshi’s journey to becoming the first Emirati female astronaut began long before the UAE had an astronaut programme. With a background in mechanical engineering, she followed her passion for space exploration and was selected to join the UAE Astronaut Corps in 2021. Alongside her colleague, Mohammed AlMulla, she trained rigorously at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) in Dubai, then moved to NASA’s Johnson Space Centre for two and a half years of intensive preparation.

Her training included spacewalk missions, International Space Station (ISS) simulations, robotic arm systems, physical fitness, and leadership skills. AlMatrooshi and her fellow astronauts continue their training at both MBRSC and NASA, working on various projects to advance the UAE’s space capabilities.

Collaborating for a Future in Space

AlMatrooshi’s efforts are part of a broader vision that involves global cooperation. The UAE is currently the fifth partner in the "Lunar Gateway" program, a space station that will orbit the moon. In this role, the UAE is responsible for developing the airlock module, a key component of the space station. This collaboration with international space agencies like NASA, Japan’s JAXA, Canada’s CSA, and the European Space Agency (ESA) is a testament to the UAE’s growing presence in the global space community.

From Mechanical Engineering to Spaceflight

Before joining the UAE astronaut corps, AlMatrooshi’s mechanical engineering background set the foundation for her future in space exploration. Encouraged by her family, she followed her dream, joining astronauts like Hazza Al Mansouri, the first Emirati to go to space, and Sultan Al Neyadi, the first Arab to perform a spacewalk.

As part of her training, AlMatrooshi piloted high-speed jets, mastered the systems of the International Space Station, and participated in spacewalk simulations at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in the US. Her extensive preparation is a reflection of her commitment to representing the UAE on the global space stage.

Recognizing Bravery and Independence

AlMatrooshi’s inspiring journey was recently honored at the Woman of Distinction event at the American Academy for Girls. During the event, students recognized AlMatrooshi’s bravery and independence, naming her an honorary house leader for her outstanding contributions. For students like Alia Saleh, Mahra Masam, and Fatma AlShehhi, AlMatrooshi’s courage serves as a powerful example of overcoming societal expectations and stepping out of their comfort zones.

“I was truly empowered by her story,” said Alia. “Especially as girls, we usually get intimidated to go out there into a male-dominated world. AlMatrooshi’s courage made us feel more confident about challenging those expectations.”

The event sparked the students’ own dreams for the future, with ambitions ranging from becoming eco-ambassadors focusing on sustainability to inspiring Emirati women in education and healthcare. Some even expressed their interest in pursuing engineering and advanced studies in physics, demonstrating the profound impact AlMatrooshi's story has had on the next generation of leaders.

Conclusion: Paving the Way for Future Astronauts

Noora AlMatrooshi’s journey is not just a personal triumph but a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations of Emiratis, particularly young girls, to dream big and explore the stars. With her dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to her country, she is leading the way for the UAE’s growing presence in space exploration.

As AlMatrooshi looks toward the future, we can all look forward to seeing the UAE flag planted on the moon, marking the next milestone in the nation’s remarkable space odyssey.
