UAE's AED 500 Banknote Wins 'Best New Banknote Issue 2025' Award
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made waves in the world of currency with its groundbreaking AED 500 polymer banknote, which has won the coveted Best New Banknote Issue 2025 award for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. The award was announced during the High Security Printing EMEA conference held in Basel, Switzerland, in early February 2025, recognizing the UAE’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity in banknote design.
A Design That Reflects Sustainability and Innovation
The newly released AED 500 banknote stands out for its cutting-edge design and advanced security features, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of currency. This polymer banknote, which entered circulation on November 30, 2023, is the third-generation note produced by the UAE. It brings together sustainability and security in a truly remarkable way. Made from fully recyclable polymer material, it supports the UAE's green economy vision while also offering durability that extends the note’s life span.
One of the most striking elements of the banknote is its integration of three-dimensional elements and the region’s largest surface-applied foil stripe, a feature that was first introduced in the award-winning AED 1000 polymer banknote in 2023. These high-tech security features ensure that the new banknote is not only visually impressive but also incredibly secure against counterfeiting.
A Tribute to the UAE’s Iconic Landmarks
The design of the AED 500 banknote is a true reflection of the UAE’s modern identity. On the front side, it features the Terra Sustainability Pavilion at Expo City Dubai, symbolizing the UAE’s dedication to environmental sustainability and its efforts in shaping a greener future. The reverse side showcases the Museum of the Future, along with the iconic Emirates Towers and Burj Khalifa. These landmarks, representing the cutting edge of architecture and innovation, are also a nod to sustainability, particularly the Burj Khalifa, which relies heavily on solar energy.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
In addition to its innovative design and sustainability features, the AED 500 banknote also prioritizes inclusivity. To ensure accessibility for all, especially those with visual impairments, the note incorporates Braille symbols, allowing visually impaired individuals to identify and use the banknote with ease.
Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor of Banking Operations & Support Services at the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), expressed pride in this achievement, stating:
"This award reaffirms our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity. We take pride in pioneering banknotes that merge cutting-edge security with environmentally friendly materials while ensuring accessibility for all."
A Step Toward a Sustainable Financial Future
The win of the Best New Banknote Issue 2025 award highlights the UAE’s leadership in the field of sustainable financial solutions and advanced banknote security. With the launch of this polymer banknote, the UAE continues to push boundaries and set new standards for currency design and production.
As the world increasingly focuses on environmental sustainability and technological innovation, the UAE is showing that even the smallest details, such as the design of a banknote, can make a significant impact. This achievement is not just a milestone for the UAE but a symbol of how modern economies can blend security, sustainability, and inclusivity into a single, powerful piece of currency.
With the UAE’s ongoing commitment to eco-friendly financial solutions, the future looks bright for sustainable banking and currency systems across the globe.
