UAE Welcomes Ceasefire and Hostage Release in Gaza Strip
On December 31, 2023, the UAE expressed its heartfelt support for the announcement of a ceasefire agreement and the release of detainees, hostages, and captives in the Gaza Strip. The country’s commitment to peace and humanitarian relief in the region was underscored by a statement from Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE.
In his remarks, Sheikh Abdullah commended the diplomatic efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States in brokering the ceasefire agreement. He emphasized the hope that this significant development would pave the way for an end to the ongoing suffering in the region, prevent further loss of life, and ultimately bring an end to the crisis that has affected both Palestinians and Israelis.
A Call for Adherence to Agreements
Sheikh Abdullah stressed the importance of both parties adhering to the terms of the ceasefire and related agreements to alleviate the ongoing anguish faced by Palestinian captives and Israeli hostages. The UAE Minister's statement underscored the necessity of following through on these commitments to ensure that the humanitarian situation improves for all civilians in the Gaza Strip.
Humanitarian Aid and Support for Peace
In addition to the call for adherence to the ceasefire, Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the UAE’s long-standing position regarding the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. He emphasized the importance of delivering aid to civilians who have endured critical humanitarian conditions for more than 15 months. The UAE has continually advocated for unhindered and sustainable aid delivery, recognizing the devastating toll the ongoing conflict has taken on innocent lives.
The Minister also reinforced the UAE's strong stance on the Middle East peace process. He called for international support to revive peace efforts and put an end to illegal practices that threaten the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Sheikh Abdullah reiterated the UAE's unwavering commitment to promoting peace, justice, and the protection of the rights of the Palestinian people.
Looking Forward
As the situation in the Gaza Strip remains fragile, the UAE’s call for peace, justice, and humanitarian support reflects the nation's enduring commitment to regional stability. The hope is that this ceasefire marks a turning point in the long-standing conflict, one that leads to sustainable peace and the eventual realization of a two-state solution in the Middle East.
As the world continues to watch the evolving situation, it is clear that the UAE remains dedicated to supporting efforts for peace and reconciliation, both in the Gaza Strip and throughout the broader region.
