UAE Strengthens Green Mobility with New EV Charging Stations
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is making significant strides toward a sustainable and eco-friendly future. Recently, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), in collaboration with UAEV and Emirates Transport, announced an exciting initiative: the installation and operation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Emirates Transport buildings.
Driving Toward a Greener Future
The move aligns perfectly with UAEV’s mission to support the transition to green mobility. By increasing the share of EVs on UAE roads to 50% by 2050, the country aims to reduce its carbon footprint and promote cleaner transportation options.
Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI and Chairman of UAEV, emphasized the commitment to expanding the national EV charging infrastructure. He stated:“Through this collaboration, we will explore ways to make the public transport sector more sustainable. This involves reviewing the use of hydrogen vehicles in the future and examining sustainable modes of transportation. Our goal is to decarbonize the transport sector, aligning with the UAE’s ambitious net-zero target by 2050. Additionally, MoEI and Emirates Transport will work together to create policies that encourage EV adoption in the private sector.”
The Growing EV Market
As of 2023, EVs accounted for approximately 3% of all vehicles in the UAE. Notably, the country ranked second in the Middle East for EV sales, according to a report by the International Energy Agency. In the same year, 13% of total car sales were electric vehicles.
Looking ahead, UAEV plans to install 100 EV chargers in 2024 and a total of 1,000 chargers by 2030 across the UAE. This ambitious infrastructure development will facilitate convenient charging for EV owners and encourage more people to embrace electric mobility.
CEO’s Perspective
Alex Rentier, CEO of Emirates Transport, highlighted the positive impact of integrating EV charging stations into the transport network:“By reducing our carbon footprint and promoting environmentally friendly transportation options, we contribute to a cleaner and healthier UAE. These charging stations are a crucial step toward achieving our sustainability goals.”
In summary, the UAE’s commitment to green mobility through EV charging infrastructure sets an inspiring example for other nations. As the world shifts toward cleaner energy solutions, the UAE is leading the way, driving us all toward a greener, more sustainable future.
