UAE-Made AI Models Propel Middle East onto Global Tech Map, Says AWS Executive
The UAE’s commitment to developing artificial intelligence tools, including the Falcon large language model, is positioning the country and the broader region as significant contenders in the global technology arena. This assertion comes from Kevin Miller, vice president for global data centres at Amazon Web Services (AWS), during an interview with The National.
Miller emphasized that locally-developed AI models are uniquely positioned to cater to Middle Eastern users at both corporate and individual levels, given the developers' inherent understanding of local user requirements. "Clearly, Falcon is part of the conversation around core foundational models … that alone tells you there's a lot of capability in the Middle East to build game and world-changing technical capabilities," he remarked on the sidelines of the AWS Summit in Dubai.
He further highlighted the region's emerging status as a technology hub, noting the substantial investments flowing in from the West. These investments are driven by a young, educated workforce and a burgeoning interest in start-ups. “There is also an enterprise customer population that is really interested in transforming their businesses … we're definitely seeing the right combination of factors that are very exciting for the Middle East,” Miller added.
Falcon, developed by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi, is a prime example of the UAE's AI prowess. Large language models (LLMs) like Falcon are types of generative AI that can mimic human intelligence, capable of recognizing, reviewing, translating, forecasting, and generating new content—whether text, audio, or visual—using vast data sets.
Earlier this month, TII unveiled the latest iteration of its Falcon model, Falcon 2, designed to compete with leading models from Meta, Google, and OpenAI. The new series, which is multilingual, has undergone rigorous testing against several prominent AI models.
Additionally, another Abu Dhabi-developed LLM, Jais, has also gained traction. Created by local AI powerhouse G42 in collaboration with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and Silicon Valley-based Cerebras Systems, Jais was released in 2023.
Miller commended the strategic investments in foundational research and development by universities and countries in the region. "It's really smart for universities and countries to be investing in foundational research and development in this space,” he said.
The UAE’s advancements in AI are not only highlighting the region’s potential but also solidifying its status as a formidable player in the global tech landscape. As the Middle East continues to innovate and invest in technology, its influence on the global stage is set to grow exponentially.
