In a significant move to streamline services and enhance convenience for its citizens, the UAE passport authority has announced the extension of Emirati passport validity to 10 years. Starting Monday, July 8, 2024, this new service will be available to citizens aged 21 and above, according to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP).

A Step Towards Efficiency

Previously, Emirati passports were valid for five years from the date of issuance. This extension to 10 years is aimed at reducing the bureaucratic process and the frequency of renewals, allowing citizens to make only one trip for renewal every decade. This initiative supports the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline bureaucracy and save valuable time for its citizens.

Positive Citizen Feedback

Emirati citizens have welcomed this new policy with enthusiasm. Fatima Al Balooshi, a 26-year-old resident of Al Ain, expressed her gratitude: "This is yet another example of how our leaders always look for ways to improve the lives of its citizens. I recently renewed my passport at Dubai Airport in less than 30 minutes." Fatima highlighted how the extended validity will ease her and her family’s lives, especially given their busy schedules.

Ahmed Khalifa, a 34-year-old national based in Dubai, echoed similar sentiments. "The UAE has a long history of implementing policies that make life more convenient for its people. The 10-year validity will save us time and effort in the long run," he noted, appreciating the government's continuous efforts to enhance the quality of life for its people.

Details on Implementation

Major General Suhail Juma Al Khaili, Director General of Identity and Passports at the Authority, clarified that the 10-year validity applies only to citizens aged 21 and above. For those under 21, the passport will continue to have a five-year validity. The new 10-year passports will be issued through the same established procedures and delivery channels as the current passports.

Citizens can apply for the new service when their existing passports expire or when all its pages are fully used, whichever occurs first. Several convenient options are available for renewing the new 10-year passports. Domestically, citizens can apply through their local passport offices managed by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs.

Emergency and Overseas Renewals

For urgent needs, dedicated passport offices at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah airports are open 24/7 to accommodate emergency renewals. Additionally, UAE citizens residing overseas can access the new 10-year passport service through UAE embassies and consulates in their respective countries.

This extension in passport validity is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to improving the efficiency and convenience of its services for its citizens, marking yet another milestone in the nation's ongoing journey towards excellence in governance and citizen welfare.
