UAE Companies Encouraged to Prioritize Diversity in Workforce for Visa Approvals
Recent reports have surfaced indicating a change in the issuance of work visas for certain South Asian nationalities in the UAE. While there have been claims suggesting a halt in visa issuance for Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis, experts clarify that the issue revolves around a broader initiative to promote workforce diversity.
Companies with a significant number of employees from a specific nationality may encounter challenges when applying for new visas for individuals from the same nationality. Notifications from authorities advise these companies to "achieve demographic diversity while hiring." This directive, clarified by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), is part of an effort to ensure that the first 20% of available quotas in establishments are allocated to different nationalities, fostering a balanced workforce.
It is important to note that this directive is not specific to any particular nationality, and once the 20% diversity threshold is met, companies can freely hire individuals from any nationality. As of now, this rule does not apply to free zones, and companies operating within free zones have not faced similar challenges in obtaining work permits.
The emphasis on diversity aligns with broader initiatives in the UAE, including the introduction of a three-tier classification system by the MoHRE in 2022. Achieving diversity in the workforce is a criterion for companies to attain a higher classification, making them eligible for incentives such as discounts on work permits and transfer fees.
The move towards a more diverse workforce aims to integrate the social and cultural richness of the UAE into the core values of private sector companies. This includes diversifying cultural backgrounds among employees, providing equal employment opportunities, and supporting initiatives for the empowerment of UAE citizens in the workforce.
