UAE Announces Paid Holiday for Private Sector Employees on Prophet Muhammad's Birthday
The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has declared Sunday, September 15 (12 Rabi al-Awwal 1446H) as a paid public holiday for private sector employees in observance of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
In line with UAE labor laws, employees required to work on this day are entitled to compensation. Employers may request employees to work during official public holidays, but in return, the employer must provide compensatory leave or pay a full day’s salary along with an additional 50% of the basic salary.
Additionally, if work conditions require employees to work on holidays, they will either receive a substitute rest day or be paid their regular salary for that day, plus a supplement of at least 50% of their basic salary.
The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources has also issued a circular confirming the public sector holiday for this occasion.
Across many Islamic countries, including those in the Gulf, the Prophet’s birthday is traditionally observed on 12 Rabi' Al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar.
Following this public holiday, UAE residents can look forward to another extended break in December for National Day. With December 2 and 3 falling on a Monday and Tuesday, residents can enjoy a four-day holiday when combined with the weekend.
