Alexa's Growing Role in Smart Homes

In 2023 alone, Alexa users in the UAE and Saudi Arabia initiated nearly 130 million smart home actions. They also made over 100 million requests to listen to music, Quran, and podcasts, accumulating more than 70 million hours of listening. Lighting, air conditioners, TVs, and cameras are among the most popular categories of smart home devices controlled by Alexa.

Throughout 2023, Alexa turned the lights on and off over 24 million times in homes across the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Voice control of air conditioners was the second most frequently used feature, with nearly nine million commands issued. This widespread adoption of voice-enabled home automation demonstrates a significant shift towards smarter living.

Rapid Adoption of Smart Home Technology

The Middle East has seen a substantial increase in the adoption of smart home technology. In 2023, there was a more than 50% year-on-year increase in smart home customers compared to 2022. Additionally, the number of smart home devices connected to Alexa saw a more than 90% year-on-year increase. Alexa users in the region expressed their affection for the technology, with over two million instances of "I love you" and 60,000 marriage proposals directed at Alexa in 2023.

Recently, Amazon introduced a new feature for customers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia that enables the multi-view option. This feature allows users to view live feeds from up to four cameras, including Ring cameras, on their multimodal devices. Users can also ask Alexa to show their recently active cameras or those in a specific group with commands like “Show my Living Room cameras.”
