The Blue Line of Dubai Metro is approved by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed
The Honorable The ambitious Blue Line project for the Dubai Metro, valued at AED 18 billion, has received clearance from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. The project, which will be completed in 2029—the year of the Dubai Metro's 20th anniversary—would traverse 30 km and include 14 stations, the largest of which is the 44,000-square-meter subterranean station located in the International City neighborhood.
The Blue Line introduces three vital interchange stations – The Creek, Centrepoint, and International City 1 Stations – alongside an iconic station at Dubai Creek Harbour. Significantly, this transportation initiative is the first to align with Green Buildings specifications (Platinum category). The launch ceremony, held at Dubai Creek Harbour, was inaugurated by Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the UAE.
This new metro route marks a historic milestone as the first line to cross Dubai Creek through a 1,300-meter viaduct. Encompassing a total length of 30 km, with 15.5 km underground and 14.5 km above ground, the line comprises nine elevated stations and five underground stations. It establishes a direct link between Dubai International Airport and key areas such as Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City.
Travel times between these destinations are expected to vary from 10 to 25 minutes. By 2030, the Blue Line aims to cater to approximately 200,000 daily passengers, with projections increasing to 320,000 daily passengers by 2040. The line is designed to accommodate an estimated capacity of about 56,000 passengers per hour in both directions, with a service interval of approximately 1.5 minutes.
The first route of the Blue Line begins at the Creek Interchange Station on the Green Line, passing through significant locations before reaching Dubai International City 1. The second route initiates from the Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line, concluding at the Dubai International City 1 Interchange Station. The project also encompasses the development of a metro depot at Al Ruwayyah 3.
Upon its completion, Dubai's comprehensive railway network will extend from 101 km to 131 km, covering 120 km for the Dubai Metro and 11 km for the Dubai Tram. The total number of metro and tram stations will rise from 64 to 78, with the fleet expanding from 140 to 168 trains. This expansion underscores Dubai's commitment to growth, connectivity, and advancing its transportation infrastructure.
