Renewing Hope: Organ Donation in UAE During Ramadan
In the sacred month of Ramadan, known for its spirit of generosity and giving, there's a unique opportunity for citizens and residents of the UAE to extend their charitable endeavors beyond traditional means. This year, alongside the customary acts of providing food and clothing to the less fortunate, there's a growing emphasis on supporting organ donation—a practice that saves lives and fosters unity within communities.
The UAE has been actively promoting organ donation as a means to not only save individuals facing organ failure but also to strengthen the bonds of empathy and compassion among its people. The shortage of organs for transplantation remains a significant challenge globally, and initiatives like organ donation registries see a surge in participation during Ramadan.
Understanding the religious and legal aspects of organ donation is crucial. According to Islamic Sharia, organ donation is permissible and can be a lifesaving act. The majority of religious scholars support this view, helping to bridge the gap between the demand for organs and their availability.
Signing up as an organ donor is a straightforward process through the National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue "Hayat." Any UAE resident aged 18 and above can register their willingness to donate organs after their passing via the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) website.
It's essential to inform your family about your decision to donate organs, as they play a pivotal role in honoring your wishes. The organ donation process involves prompt communication with the family of potential donors following their passing. Living donors can contribute kidneys or a portion of their liver to relatives, while brain-dead individuals can save multiple lives by donating vital organs like the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and pancreas.
Since its inception, the Hayat programme has witnessed significant success, with donors and recipients from diverse backgrounds benefiting from organ donations. Over 25,300 individuals have registered, and more than 460 organ transplants have been performed, making it one of the fastest-growing organ donation initiatives globally.
Withdrawal from organ donation registration is possible through a formal application process. However, it's important to note that organ donation for monetary gain is strictly prohibited under UAE law, which criminalizes organ trafficking.
The UAE government emphasizes the importance of legal and authorized organ transplants, listing licensed facilities for organ transplantation, including renowned hospitals like Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, King's College Hospital London - Dubai, and others.
By spreading awareness and encouraging participation in organ donation, especially during Ramadan, we can collectively contribute to saving lives and fostering a culture of compassion and solidarity in the UAE.
