The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is no stranger to extreme weather, but this year seems to be pushing the limits. As the mercury soared past the 50ºC mark not once, but twice this week, residents and weather enthusiasts alike are taking notice.

High Temperatures and Sweltering Conditions

On Monday, July 8, the Sweihan region of Al Ain recorded a blistering high of 50.7°C. Just a day later, on Tuesday, July 9, two areas—Shawamekh (Abu Dhabi) and Sweihan—saw the temperature climb even higher, reaching 50.8ºC. These scorching conditions are typical of the UAE’s summer, with partly cloudy skies and humidity lingering into the evenings.

UAE vs. Global Records

While Dubai may feel like an inferno during those brief moments between air-conditioned spaces, it’s not the hottest place on Earth. The official record for the UAE’s highest temperature stands at 52.1ºC (125.78ºF), recorded in July 2002. But that’s still not enough to claim the top spot globally.

Death Valley in California, USA, holds that honor, with a mind-boggling 54.4ºC. Locally, Mitribah in Kuwait reached 53.3ºC back in 2011, making it the reigning champion in our region.

So, as the UAE continues to sizzle, let’s appreciate the shade, stay hydrated, and marvel at the extreme temperatures that Mother Nature throws our way.
