New Airport Set to Ease Travel to Italy's Amalfi Coast
Italy's renowned Amalfi Coast, beloved for its picturesque villages and lemon-draped cliffs, is poised to become more accessible with the opening of Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport as a commercial hub starting July 2024.
Currently, reaching destinations like Amalfi and Positano involves a convoluted journey via Naples airport followed by lengthy train and bus rides. However, the debut of Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport promises to streamline travel to this UNESCO-designated region.
Located 45 kilometers southeast of Amalfi and 21 kilometers from Salerno, the airport's reopening marks a significant milestone. Originally established in 1926 and repurposed over the years for various functions, including military operations and private use, the airport will now cater to international travelers.
The airport's infrastructure has undergone extensive upgrades, including runway extensions and the construction of a new passenger terminal set to be completed by 2027. Spanish budget airline Volotea is set to kickstart commercial operations from Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport on July 11, offering flights to Cagliari, Verona, Catania (Italy), and Nantes (France), with additional routes slated for September.
Authorities anticipate continuous development until 2043, with projected passenger traffic reaching six million annually. While the prospect of enhanced accessibility has been well-received by local tourism and hospitality sectors, concerns persist regarding the potential strain on infrastructure and the environment.
As Italy's Amalfi Coast prepares to welcome travelers with open arms, the balance between increased tourism and preserving its natural charm remains a pressing consideration for stakeholders.
