Neuralink Implants Brain Chip in First Human
Elon Musk's brain-chip startup Neuralink has successfully implanted its first human patient with an innovative brain-chip implant. Musk revealed that the patient is recovering well, with promising initial results showing neuron spike detection.
The US Food and Drug Administration granted Neuralink clearance last year to conduct its first human trial, marking a significant milestone in the company's mission to assist patients with paralysis and neurological conditions. The trial utilizes a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant placed in the brain region controlling movement, allowing individuals to control devices using their thoughts.
Neuralink's "ultra-fine" threads aid in transmitting signals within the brain. Musk announced that the first product from Neuralink will be called Telepathy.
While the startup's PRIME Study evaluates the safety of its wireless brain-computer interface, concerns have been raised about safety protocols. Neuralink faced scrutiny after reports of violating transportation rules and concerns about the technology's safety, following issues observed in monkeys. Despite this, Musk affirmed that no monkeys died as a result of Neuralink implants.
