The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) has unveiled a series of impactful initiatives as part of its ongoing commitment to promoting human rights awareness. Launched in alignment with Human Rights Day 2024, the "Know Your Rights" awareness campaign aims to increase understanding and engagement with human rights principles, empowering individuals across various sectors to advocate for their rights.

A New Era of Human Rights Awareness: "Our Rights, Our Future. Right Now"

With the theme "Our Rights, Our Future. Right Now," the NHRI’s awareness campaign is focused on fostering a deeper understanding of human rights in society. The goal is to engage diverse communities in learning about their rights and the frameworks that protect them, ensuring that human rights education is accessible and relevant to all.

One of the key components of this campaign is the creation of the Knowledge Lab, a seminar series designed to educate NHRI employees on critical human rights issues. The inaugural seminar, titled "Introduction to Human Rights and International Human Rights Law," will be led by Dr. Ahmed Al Mansoori, a member of the NHRI Board of Trustees. This session marks the beginning of an ongoing effort to enhance the knowledge base of NHRI staff, enabling them to advocate more effectively for human rights and contribute to the institution’s mission.

Collaborative Discussions and International Engagement

The NHRI is also stepping up its international collaboration efforts. In partnership with the Geneva Centre for Human Rights and Global Dialogue (GCHRAGD), the NHRI will host a joint panel discussion on December 11, as part of the GCHRAGD's Human Rights Awareness Week 2024. The event, titled "The Role of NHRIs in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights," will bring together prominent figures in the human rights field, including NHRI Chairperson Maqsoud Kruse and GCHRAGD Executive Director Dr. Umesh Palwankar.

Kruse has highlighted some of the NHRI’s key focus areas, which include labor rights, women and children’s rights, rights of people of determination (those with disabilities), and health and mental health rights. The event aims to showcase the essential role that National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) play in both promoting and protecting human rights at a national and international level.

Looking Ahead: New Programs and Initiatives

In addition to the Knowledge Lab, the NHRI is planning several new initiatives to further promote human rights education and awareness. One of the most exciting upcoming projects is the launch of "Manabir", a YouTube series set to debut in 2025. This series will provide accessible human rights education in video format, allowing viewers to learn about key human rights topics and how they can engage with them in their own lives.

The NHRI is also planning to release the semi-annual "Rights Journal", which will serve as a platform for discussing important human rights issues, sharing research, and providing updates on the institution’s activities. Another important initiative on the horizon is the "Human Rights Oasis", a forum designed to facilitate civil society engagement with human rights topics. These programs, alongside ongoing efforts like the Legislation Lab and Knowledge Lab, will continue to foster dialogue and education surrounding human rights.
