MoHAP Launches National School Health Screening Guideline to Boost Student Well-being
In a major step towards improving student health across the UAE, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has introduced the National School Health Screening Guideline. This comprehensive initiative aims to standardize health checks for students in schools across the country, ensuring that all children, from kindergarten to grade 12, receive the necessary screenings to identify and address health issues early on.
A Unified Approach to Student Health
Developed in collaboration with health, education, and social authorities, the new guidelines are designed to provide a consistent approach to health examinations for students. One of the key objectives is to create a reliable national database of student health information, making it easier to track and manage health issues across the nation. The guideline aligns with international best practices, as well as the UAE’s sustainable development goals and the ambitious UAE Centennial Plan 2071, which aims to establish the country as a global leader in various sectors, including health.
What Does the Health Screening Include?
The National School Health Screening Guideline includes a range of health assessments that cover various aspects of students' physical and mental well-being. These health screenings will be conducted annually and include:
- Growth Metrics: Regular assessments of height, weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI) to track students' physical development.
- Vision and Hearing Checks: Early detection of any issues related to vision or hearing that could impact a student’s learning experience.
- Dental Health Evaluations: Ensuring students maintain good oral hygiene and addressing any potential dental issues.
- Scoliosis Detection: Regular screenings for scoliosis to prevent long-term health problems.
- Mental Health and Behavioral Assessments: The guidelines place significant emphasis on mental well-being, with special focus on assessing mental health, behavioral issues, and monitoring smoking habits in students over the age of 10.
In addition to these physical health checks, the guideline also reviews vaccination records, ensuring that they are up to date in accordance with the national immunization program.
Promoting Health Literacy Among Students
Beyond the physical screenings, the National School Health Screening Guideline also emphasizes the importance of health education. The guideline incorporates age-appropriate awareness programs aimed at boosting students' health literacy. These programs are designed to empower students with knowledge about maintaining their health, preventing illnesses, and adopting healthier lifestyles.
Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Public Health Sector, emphasized that this initiative reflects the UAE's ongoing commitment to the well-being of its children and adolescents. By focusing on early detection and preventive healthcare, the country is ensuring that students have the best foundation for a healthy future.
A Collaborative Effort for a Healthier Future
Dr. Suad Al Awar, Head of the Family Health Department, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between various sectors—health, education, and social services—to prioritize student health. The guideline is supported by national programs like the National Programme to Combat Obesity, further reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to tackling critical health issues that affect young people today.
MoHAP’s Vision for Integrated Healthcare
The launch of the National School Health Screening Guideline is part of MoHAP's broader vision to promote integrated and preventive healthcare for students. By ensuring that students’ physical and mental health is regularly monitored and addressed, MoHAP aims to secure the well-being of the next generation, which is key to the future success and prosperity of the UAE.
