Living in the Burj Khalifa: A Unique Look at New Year's Eve Preparations
As the world eagerly counts down to the grand New Year’s Eve celebration at the Burj Khalifa, some lucky residents have the privilege of experiencing the magic firsthand. These fortunate few enjoy a front-row seat to the intense preparations that transform the world’s tallest building into the ultimate beacon of celebration.
The Countdown Begins Early
For residents like Dr. Mina Jethu, a dentist from Amsterdam, the excitement begins long before the clock strikes midnight. “The first signs of preparation start around November 30, when the laser lamps for the light show are being attached to the building,” she explains.
Throughout December, these preparations ramp up. “I’ve started noticing what looks like Mission Impossible-style stunts,” Dr. Mina laughs. “Experts assembling the framework for the fireworks—it’s amusing to watch the lamps move and display different colors during the testing phase, even if it’s early in the morning.”
For Mina, living in the Burj Khalifa offers a unique perspective on the buildup. “Residents receive detailed instructions about the New Year’s events at the start of December. We can even secure Burj Park tickets in advance, and there are specific guidelines about access and safety due to the fireworks setup,” she says, noting that staff are always available to assist.
A Personal Connection
While Dr. Mina won’t be in her apartment for the fireworks this year—she’ll be traveling to Suriname to explore her family’s heritage—she reflects fondly on her past experiences. “I’ve celebrated in the Burj Khalifa for six years, but this year I’m excited to explore South America with my family. It feels surreal to be part of the annual celebrations. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had, and I can’t wait to see the videos of the festivities.”
A Family Tradition
For Indian expat Salim Moopen, a resident on the 47th floor, New Year’s Eve at the Burj Khalifa has become a cherished family tradition. “I’ve lived here for five years, and I’ve been in many places across the UAE, but this will always be the best,” Salim says with a smile. Every year, he and his family gather with their mats in the designated viewing area, eagerly awaiting the fireworks. “This has been our ritual for many years, and it’s one of the times of the year that I always look forward to,” he adds.
Despite the preparations, Salim notes that certain facilities, like the gym and pool on the upper floors, are closed during this time. The Burj Khalifa fireworks are a spectacular event that thousands eagerly anticipate, whether in person or via live stream. For many in the UAE, being at the Burj Khalifa on New Year’s Eve is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—despite the crowds, road closures, and long-standing.
An Unexpected Twist
Last year, however, Salim and his family decided to ring in the New Year from the comfort of their apartment. “We didn’t hear a sound,” he recalls. “I expected it to be much louder, but living in the Burj Khalifa during the fireworks is an experience in itself.”
The Magic of the Burj Khalifa
Living in the Burj Khalifa offers a unique view of the world’s most famous New Year’s Eve celebration. For residents like Dr. Mina and Salim, it’s not just about the fireworks or the stunning light show. It’s about being part of a global spectacle—one that comes with its own set of traditions, preparations, and magical moments.
For anyone lucky enough to experience it, New Year's Eve at the Burj Khalifa is a moment they will never forget. Whether you're watching from an apartment high above the city or on the streets below, the Burj Khalifa’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are an unforgettable way to ring in the new year.
