Air taxis are set to revolutionize travel in the UAE, with plans to drastically reduce travel time between Dubai Airport and Palm Jumeirah. According to Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency at Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, these air taxis could shorten the journey from 30-45 minutes to just 10 minutes, thanks to their top speeds of 320 km/hr.

Bahrozyan expressed excitement about the potential of these air taxis, highlighting their ability to facilitate inter-emirates trips due to their impressive range. The project, a collaboration between Skyports, Joby (the aircraft operator), and the RTA, was solidified with definitive agreements signed at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024.

The launch of the project is scheduled for 2026, marking a significant milestone in transportation innovation. Initially, the service will operate within Dubai, but there are plans to expand to other emirates based on demand.

The air taxis, featuring four passenger seats and one pilot seat, promise to deliver a unique travel experience. While initially piloted, there are future prospects for autonomous operation. JoeBen Bevirt, CEO of Joby, announced plans to commence flight testing in the UAE in early 2025, with commercial service targeted for 2026.

The passenger experience is designed to be seamless and efficient, with zero-touch boarding processes utilizing biometrics. The vertiports, akin to airports but without the waiting times, will offer modern amenities for travelers while prioritizing speed and convenience.

Construction of the vertiports is set to commence in June, with the first one expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The project signifies a significant leap forward in urban mobility, promising to redefine travel in the UAE.
