Expo City Dubai: A New Vision for a Pedestrian-Friendly, Sustainable Urban Environment
Expo City Dubai is evolving into a dynamic, sustainable hub that prioritizes pedestrians, green spaces, and innovative design. Originally envisioned as a completely vehicle-free urban space, the city’s new master plan has adapted to accommodate essential vehicle access while maintaining its commitment to creating a more walkable and eco-friendly environment.
A New Vision for Mobility in Expo City
Expo City will be a thriving community for over 35,000 residents and 40,000 professionals. Located in Dubai’s south, this ambitious project spans 3.5 square kilometers and blends residential, business, and recreational spaces. The vision for Expo City is to offer a seamless, car-free experience in most parts of the city, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy safe, accessible pedestrian pathways.
The city’s development is centered around the principle of prioritizing pedestrians over vehicles. The new master plan actively encourages walking, cycling, and public transportation as the primary modes of movement, while still allowing limited vehicle access for private cars, delivery services, and emergency vehicles. This ensures that traffic congestion is minimized, while also providing the convenience of car access where necessary.
Designing for People, Not Cars
One of the key elements of the new design is its emphasis on pedestrian-centric zones. In these areas, vehicles will be kept to a minimum, and traffic calming measures, such as narrowed roads and speed humps, will enhance safety. The city’s streets will be designed to encourage slower vehicle speeds, improving both pedestrian safety and the overall experience of navigating the area.
The primary focus will be on creating comfortable, shaded walkways. More than 70% of the pedestrian paths will be shaded, offering much-needed relief from the sun in Dubai’s hot climate. Dedicated paths, as well as "sikkas" (narrow alleys), will weave through the city, ensuring safe and pleasant walking experiences.
Additionally, a "Green Loop" will serve as the central pedestrian route that connects the natural green spaces around the city with its urban areas. This loop will create a continuous, inviting environment for walking and cycling while promoting sustainability and well-being.
Phased Development: A City in the Making
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, approved the new master plan for Expo City in October. According to Ahmed Al Khatib, Chief Development Officer at Expo City Dubai, the city will be built in phases, ensuring that the developments align with both current market needs and future demands. The first residential units are expected to be completed by Q1 2026, with Expo Valley, Mangrove Residences, and Sky Residences already underway.
Expo City Dubai is already attracting global businesses, including industry leaders like DP World, Emirates Group, Siemens Energy, and Terminus, with more companies set to join in the coming months. In addition, a new wave of investment opportunities is being created through the Expo Business District, providing a business-friendly environment with offices for lease and plots for development.
Key Districts within Expo City
Expo City will be divided into several key districts, each with its unique characteristics:
- Expo Hills: A low-density residential community.
- Expo Fields: A district focused on healthy living, featuring sports fields, schools, and performance spaces.
- Expo Business: A campus-like environment that will cater to business professionals.
- Expo Downtown: Home to iconic structures like the Al Wasl dome and Terra Tower, which will become the tallest building in the city, offering mixed-use spaces for hospitality and offices.
- Expo Valley: A premium residential community with villas and townhouses overlooking a nature sanctuary.
A Sustainable Future
Expo City is designed to be a model for sustainable urban living. With its focus on green spaces, pedestrian-friendly zones, and mixed-use districts, it will foster a strong sense of community while embracing innovation and sustainability. The vision is clear: Expo City will not only be a place for people to live and work but a vibrant, sustainable environment where urban life and nature coexist harmoniously.
As we move toward the opening of the first residential units in 2026, Expo City Dubai is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and forward-thinking urban developments in the region. Whether you're a resident, investor, or business professional, Expo City offers a glimpse into the future of urban living.
