Etihad Rail Celebrates Inaugural Passenger Journey from Abu Dhabi to Al Dhannah
In a historic milestone for transportation in the UAE, Etihad Rail marked its first passenger journey between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhannah on Thursday. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and managing director and group chief executive of Adnoc, was among the inaugural passengers on this momentous occasion.
Once fully operational, this route, announced in November, will facilitate convenient travel for Adnoc workers from Abu Dhabi to Al Dhannah, located 250 kilometers west of the capital.
Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the significance of this development, stating, "The development of passenger rail services between Abu Dhabi City and Al Dhannah City aims to connect the UAE’s main centers of trade, industry, manufacturing, production, logistics, and population."
Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, emphasized the project's broader impact, stating, "Etihad Rail is strengthening the UAE's position as a leading global hub within the logistics, transportation, and infrastructure sectors."
While the commencement date for the UAE's passenger rail service is yet to be confirmed, plans were announced in 2022 for the first passenger station at Sakamkam in Fujairah.
In February last year, Etihad Rail announced the full operationalization of its expansive freight network, inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
The passenger trains, capable of speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour and accommodating approximately 400 passengers, are set to connect 11 cities and areas across the UAE. Passengers can anticipate a comfortable journey, equipped with amenities such as Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, charging points, and food and beverage options.
Exciting developments also include plans for a luxury train service, a collaboration between Italian luxury hospitality company Arsenale and Etihad Rail. This "rail cruise" will traverse the UAE from Fujairah to the Liwa desert in Abu Dhabi, boasting 15 luxury carriages.
In conjunction with the milestone journey, Dr. Al Jaber toured Adnoc's hub in Al Ruwais Industrial City, expressing pride in the facilities and workforce contributing to the nation's status as a global energy leader.
The inaugural passenger journey signifies a significant step forward in the UAE's vision for sustainable and efficient transportation infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth across the Emirates.
