Eid Al Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice, is set to begin next week, marking a significant occasion for millions of Muslims worldwide. The exact date, however, varies by one to two days from country to country, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
Moon Sighting and Eid Al Adha Dates
Saudi Arabia was the first to confirm the sighting of the moon on Thursday, marking the start of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. Consequently, the first day of Eid Al Adha in Saudi Arabia will be on June 16 (Dhul Hijjah 10).
However, other countries that did not spot the moon on Thursday will observe Eid Al Adha on different days. Here are the announced dates for Eid Al Adha across 13 countries based on moon-sighting results:
Saudi Arabia: June 16
- The crescent moon was spotted on Thursday evening. Thus, June 7 is the first day of Dhul Hijjah, June 15 is Arafah Day, and June 16 marks Eid Al Adha.
Oman: June 17
- The crescent moon was not sighted on Thursday. Hence, June 8 will be the first day of Dhul Hijjah, with Eid Al Adha on June 17.
Egypt: June 16
- The moon was sighted on Thursday evening. Therefore, June 7 starts Dhul Hijjah, and Eid Al Adha will be on June 16.
Australia: June 16
- Following Saudi Arabia’s moon-sighting results, Australia will observe Eid Al Adha on June 16.
New Zealand: June 18
- The moon was not spotted on Friday. Therefore, Dhul Hijjah begins on June 9, and Eid Al Adha falls on June 18.
Brunei: June 17
- The crescent moon was sighted on Friday, making June 8 the start of Dhul Hijjah, with Eid Al Adha on June 17.
Canada: June 17
- The moon was not spotted on Thursday, so Dhul Hijjah begins on June 8, and Eid Al Adha is on June 17.
US: June 17
- The crescent moon was not sighted on Thursday. Therefore, Eid Al Adha will be on June 17.
Malaysia: June 17
- The moon was sighted on Friday, marking June 8 as the start of Dhul Hijjah, with Eid Al Adha on June 17.
Indonesia: June 17
- The crescent moon was sighted on Friday, making June 8 the start of Dhul Hijjah, with Eid Al Adha on June 17.
Bangladesh: June 17
- Initially, the moon was not confirmed on Friday due to cloudy weather. After subsequent testimonies, Eid Al Adha was announced for June 17.
Pakistan: June 17
- The moon was sighted on Friday, June 7. Therefore, Eid Al Adha will be observed on June 17.
India: June 17
- The crescent moon was spotted on Friday evening. Hence, June 8 is the first day of Dhul Hijjah, and June 17 marks Eid Al Adha.
