“We want to get the intimacy of travel back,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, during a panel discussion at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual general meeting in Dubai. Griffiths emphasized the need to eliminate outdated elements that have long plagued airport operations.

A New Approach to Airport Operations

Griffiths criticized the current system where passengers from different parts of the world are funneled through a single security and immigration checkpoint. He referred to this as the “lazy airport operator syndrome,” which creates unnecessary queues and long walking distances.

In contrast, the new Al Maktoum International Airport, expected to be operational in ten years, will “re-engineer” airport operations to ease the travel experience. The airport will feature multiple security and passport control points to eliminate bottlenecks, ensuring that passengers do not have to queue for any travel-related formalities.

Seamless and Technologically Advanced

“We will not force them to stand in queues,” Griffiths stated. The goal is to leverage new techniques and technologies to make the airport experience as seamless as possible. The airport’s design will be flexible enough to incorporate future technological advancements that have yet to be conceived.

Sustainability at Its Core

Sustainability will be a central focus of the new airport’s design. Griffiths mentioned that they are exploring sustainable personal mobility options and the potential of solar energy to power the airport.

“There’s enough solar energy here in the UAE to power most of the city most of the time,” he said. Innovative methods, such as cooling water and storing it in underground tanks for night-time use, are being considered to enhance energy efficiency.
