As the clock ticked down to 7:59 PM, excitement was palpable. Crowds of visitors eagerly reached for their phones, eager to capture the dazzling spectacle. Children were perched on their parents' shoulders to get the best view of the action, while the night sky came alive with awe-inspiring visuals. Among the striking images displayed by the drones were the iconic DSF logo, a graceful ballerina in motion, a cyclist zooming through the air, and even a roller coaster—each drawing gasps of amazement from the delighted audience.

Behind the Scenes of the Spectacle

The stunning visuals and flawless execution of the drone show didn’t come easy. Kaltham Al Shamsi, Assistant Manager of Events Planning at Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), revealed that the show’s planning began nearly a year ago. “It might look easy, but we started planning this in December 2023,” she said. “There were times when we created an entire moodboard, but it didn’t quite work out the way we thought, so we had to go back and recreate it. It’s a complex, lengthy procedure.”

The meticulous planning was evident in every detail, with thousands of drones synchronizing perfectly to create fluid images across the sky. Even a single drone out of place could have thrown off the entire performance, making the precision required in the show even more impressive. "We began trialing the display in November to get it right,” Kaltham explained, underscoring the effort that went into making this a flawless spectacle.

A Magical Experience for All

For visitors like Svetlana, a tourist from Russia, the drone show was a life-changing experience. "This was my first time seeing something like this, and my mind was blown,” she said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. I am so glad I came here today."

The Cuarto family, including Carlo, Sharon, and their daughter Shanina, had seen the drone show multiple times, but they still couldn’t resist coming back for another round. Sharon shared, “We often come here, but no matter how many times we watch it, this drone show is absolutely amazing. My husband filmed the entire thing on his phone, even though we've seen it so many times.”

Even young children were enchanted by the show. Aaryan, a 4-year-old who watched the performance with his parents and aunt, couldn’t contain his excitement. “The skydivers had fire coming out of their legs!” he said, grinning ear to ear. “I loved it! And I said, ‘D for Dubai!’”

The Future of the Show

The excitement doesn’t stop here. This year’s DSF drone show features two unique themes. From December 6 to 26, the first show celebrates DSF’s rich legacy, taking audiences on a journey through three decades of the festival. From December 27 to January 12, the second theme will feature 2D and 3D drone formations of iconic landmarks.

And for those looking for a more personal touch, visitors have a chance to have their own unique message displayed in the sky during the show. But as Kaltham revealed, even a simple message requires a careful planning process: "It takes 48 hours to get a message just right."

The grand finale of DSF will take place on January 11, when an encore performance featuring 150 pyro-drones will light up the sky one last time, offering an unforgettable conclusion to this year’s festival.
