Dubai is taking bold steps toward becoming a more pedestrian-friendly city with the announcement of the massive ‘Dubai Walk’ project. Unveiled by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this innovative plan aims to transform the emirate into a hub of walkability. The project, which was revealed on December 7, will see the development of an extensive walking network, spanning 3,300 kilometers and designed to make the city more pedestrian-friendly year-round.

The ‘Dubai Walk’ initiative is part of the city’s broader vision to improve urban mobility, following its earlier efforts to create a bicycle-friendly environment. With its focus on walkability, this new project will cater to the needs of pedestrians while seamlessly integrating cutting-edge cooling technologies to ensure comfort even in the hot Dubai climate.

Key Features of the 'Dubai Walk' Project

The plan includes the creation of pathways that will connect key parts of the city, such as museums, financial centers, waterfronts, and residential areas. It’s more than just a walk – it's a complete reimagining of how we move through the city. Here are the key features of the project:

  • 3,300 km of Walkways: The core of the project revolves around building 3,300 kilometers of walkways, with a mix of urban, green, and scenic routes, offering pedestrians a safe and comfortable way to explore Dubai.

  • Pedestrian Bridges & Tunnels: The project will also see the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels, ensuring smooth transitions across major roads and highways, enabling seamless movement throughout the city.

  • Waterfront & Green Trails: Dubai Walk includes 112 kilometers of waterfront pathways, where residents can walk along the serene coastline. In addition, there will be 124 kilometers of green walking trails, perfect for nature lovers.

  • Rural & Mountain Paths: For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, the project also includes 150 kilometers of rural and mountainous pedestrian paths, allowing people to explore Dubai’s more natural landscapes.

Initial Implementation Locations

The 'Dubai Walk' project will be rolled out in phases, starting with two iconic locations that will showcase the city’s past and future:

  1. Museum of the Future: This futuristic area will feature a 2-kilometer-long bridge and a climate-controlled walkway. It will connect some of the city’s major hubs, including the Dubai World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers, the Dubai International Financial Centre, and metro stations.

  2. Al Ras: This area will take pedestrians back in time, with a 15-kilometer trail that will highlight Dubai’s rich history, waterfront areas, and green spaces, offering a blend of past and present.

A Three-Phase Plan for Expansion

The Dubai Walk project will be implemented in three phases. The first phase will focus on high-priority areas, including Al Barsha 2, Al Khawaneej 2, and Al Mizhar 1, with plans to extend the network across 160 neighborhoods in the coming years. This ambitious plan will incorporate pathways in residential areas, tourist spots, and urban neighborhoods, ensuring that everyone has easy access to walking routes.

Key new bridges will also be built as part of this phase, including:

  • Al Ittihad Street Bridge: Connecting Al Nahda and Al Mamzar.
  • Tripoli Street Bridge: Linking Al Warqa and Mirdif.
  • Dubai-Al Ain Road Bridge: Connecting Dubai Silicon Oasis and Dubailand.

Smart Application to Encourage Walking

A new smart app will also be launched as part of the project. The app will track users' walking routes, steps, and durations, and reward them with points that can be redeemed for discounts or e-wallet credits. It will also provide useful information on local attractions, art displays, and events, encouraging people to explore the city on foot.

This initiative not only aims to make Dubai more walkable but also promotes a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. By incentivizing walking, the app will motivate residents and visitors alike to embrace this eco-friendly mode of transportation.

A Vision for the Future

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that this initiative is part of Dubai's broader plan to redefine urban mobility. The ultimate goal is to build a city where people can move easily and enjoy the highest quality of life. By 2040, Dubai’s 20-minute city concept will allow residents to access daily needs and destinations within just 20 minutes by walking or cycling.

The Dubai Walk project is a bold vision for the future, where residents will have the option to walk, cycle, use extensive road networks, ride the metro, and even take water taxis or flying taxis.
