Dubai to Launch First Air Taxi Station Soon, Says RTA
Dubai is set to unveil the first station of its highly anticipated air taxi project, with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirming that the official announcement will take place soon. The initial launch of this ambitious project is scheduled for early 2026, and will feature four stations across key areas of the city.
During the Intelligent Transport Systems Conference and Exhibition held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from September 16 to 20, Khalid Al Awadhi, Director of Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, emphasized the significance of this development in Dubai’s move towards autonomous air transport. “The air taxi service aims to provide a modern and effective means of transportation, linking key areas such as hotels and the airport,” he stated.
Strategic Landing Sites in Dubai
The project’s first phase will establish four key landing sites at Dubai International Airport, Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. These stations, developed in partnership with Skyports, will feature dedicated take-off and landing zones, electric charging stations, passenger facilities, and enhanced security measures.
Tyler Trerotola, General Manager of Joby Aviation in the Middle East, revealed that the air taxi service is expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2026, with test flights possibly starting by late next year. Joby Aviation is the exclusive operator of the service for the first six years, following an agreement signed at the World Government Summit in Dubai.
Features of the Air Taxi
Joby’s air taxis are electric-powered aircraft designed to carry four passengers along with a pilot. With a top speed of 320 km/h and a range of 160 km, the air taxis offer a quieter and smoother experience compared to traditional helicopters, producing just 45 decibels of sound—equivalent to light rainfall. These aircraft are expected to cut travel time significantly, with trips from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah taking just 10 to 12 minutes, compared to over 45 minutes during peak traffic.
Revolutionizing Urban Mobility
The introduction of air taxis is a major step in easing traffic congestion on Dubai’s busy roads. By offering an alternative, environmentally friendly mode of transportation, air taxis will support the city's smart mobility initiatives and reduce reliance on traditional road transport. The electric-powered aircraft are also in line with Dubai’s sustainability goals, as they produce zero operational emissions.
A Boost to Tourism and Sustainability
In addition to reducing traffic and cutting carbon emissions, Dubai’s air taxis are expected to enhance the city’s appeal to tourists by offering a unique and innovative travel experience. With Dubai continuing to position itself as a leader in modern transportation technology, the air taxi project marks a significant milestone in the city’s journey toward sustainable urban mobility.
As the RTA gears up for the launch of Dubai’s first air taxi station, the project promises to transform the city’s transportation landscape, offering a fast, eco-friendly, and futuristic alternative for residents and visitors alike.
