Dubai to Crack Down on Fare Evasion with New Tech
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is taking steps to improve fare collection on its buses by installing automated passenger counting (APC) systems in 636 new buses.
This initiative aims to curb fare evasion, a growing concern for the transportation authority.
How the System Works
The APC system uses sensors to accurately count passengers entering and exiting the bus. This data is then compared to the number of fares collected via Nol cards (Dubai's reloadable transit cards). This real-time information will help identify discrepancies and pinpoint fare dodgers.
Benefits Beyond Fare Collection
The APC system offers more than just fare enforcement. It can also provide valuable data on passenger volume on specific routes and times. This information can be used to optimize bus deployment, ensuring buses are available where and when they're needed most.
The Current Situation
Fare evasion is a persistent issue for the RTA. In a recent six-day inspection, over 1,100 commuters were caught skipping fares. The RTA urges passengers to use their Nol cards to ensure a smooth and efficient public transport system for everyone.
Looking Ahead
The implementation of APC systems, along with ongoing inspection campaigns, demonstrates the RTA's commitment to tackling fare evasion. This initiative will not only improve revenue collection but also enhance the overall experience for Dubai's bus commuters.
