Dubai has initiated a prohibition on e-scooters within the premises of the Metro and Tram, effective March 1, aimed at enhancing passenger safety.

Announced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Thursday, February 29, commuters are instructed not to bring their last-mile transportation devices inside these facilities.

In a tweet, the transport authority stated: "To ensure your safety and that of others, the use of e-scooters inside Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram will be prohibited, starting Friday, March 1." The RTA emphasized #YourSafetyOurPriority.

On the same day, authorities unveiled a surveillance robot designed to detect violations by users of bicycles and electric scooters. This robot, responsible for monitoring and identifying infractions, will undergo trials from March onwards.

Incidents such as smoke detection from an electric scooter at Onpassive metro station last month have spurred concerns. Complaints against e-scooter riders have escalated, particularly regarding indiscriminate parking, sidewalk blockage, and occupation of parking slots in residential communities.

In response, some residential buildings had previously banned tenants from bringing e-scooters indoors, citing safety reasons.

E-scooters have gained popularity as a mode of transport, with over 63,500 e-scooter permits issued since April 2022.
