Dubai's Ambitious Road Projects Pave the Way for a Traffic-Free Future
Dubai has been actively implementing significant road projects in recent months, enhancing the city's infrastructure and paving the way for a more efficient and traffic-free future. These projects include the Dubai-Al Ain Road improvement, the Infinity Bridge as part of the Al Shindagha corridor improvement, and the Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed corridor improvement.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has ambitious plans for the next phase, as top officials shared with Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Among the planned developments are:
Hessa Street: This 4.5km stretch, from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road, will be upgraded to accommodate 16,000 vehicles per hour.
Umm Suqeim Street: Extending 4.6km from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, this project aims to increase capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
Al Khaleej Street: Spanning 3km from the Infinity Bridge ramp to Cairo Street, this project includes the construction of three underpasses covering 1.65km, with an estimated capacity of approximately 12,000 vehicles per hour.
During the briefing, Sheikh Hamdan was provided with insights into the strategic projects and initiatives undertaken by the RTA. The rapid development of Dubai's road network infrastructure was highlighted, with the total length of the road network expanding from 8,715 lane-km in 2006 to 18,768 in 2022, reflecting an impressive growth of 115 percent.
Furthermore, Dubai's commitment to road network safety has positioned it among the top global cities for traffic safety, alongside counterparts in Sweden, Norway, and Japan. Notably, Dubai has outperformed major global cities such as Los Angeles, Montreal, Sydney, Berlin, Rome, and Milan in terms of the average time required to travel a distance of 10km within its central business district (CBD). According to the 2022 traffic index report by TomTom, Dubai's CBD recorded a journey time of 12 minutes per 10km, compared to the global average of 21 minutes per 10km. These achievements underscore Dubai's dedication to efficient and safe urban mobility.
