In a groundbreaking discovery, Japanese and Swiss scientists have developed a glass capable of generating electric current when exposed to light. This innovation holds promise for clean energy production, potentially revolutionizing the way we harness solar power in the future.

Researchers from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne utilized a femtosecond laser to etch circuits onto the glass's surface, resulting in the generation of electric current. The unexpected semiconductor crystal formation on the glass, courtesy of the laser, sparked a chain reaction, leading to the glass's newfound ability to conduct electricity in response to ultraviolet and visible light.

Lead researcher Yves Bellouard, hailing from the Galatea Lab at the Swiss school, described the technology as "surprising and innovative," emphasizing its transformative nature without the need for additional materials. Collaborating with Goezden Torun, a student with prior femtosecond laser experience, the team achieved remarkable results using tellurite glass provided by the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Associate professor Tetsuo Kishi highlighted the glass's transformation from a passive to an active material, akin to a semiconductor, post-laser treatment. With potential applications in lightweight, thinner glass compositions, the researchers envision a future where partially covered windows could harness solar energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainability.
