Abu Dhabi International Airport Introduces Cutting-Edge Biometric Systems for Swift Passenger Journey at Terminal A
In a bid to enhance passenger experience and efficiency, Abu Dhabi International Airport has unveiled state-of-the-art biometric systems at its new Terminal A. This technological upgrade is geared towards facilitating a faster and smoother journey for travelers from the curb to their departure gates.
Airport officials boast that passengers can now traverse from the terminal's exterior to their gates in a remarkable 12 minutes, all thanks to advanced airport technologies and streamlined processes. The newly introduced self-service baggage drop-off kiosks take a mere 30 seconds, immigration procedures are swiftly cleared in 10 seconds, and flight boarding at the gate requires a mere three seconds, according to Andrew Murphy, Chief Information Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports.
This marks a significant improvement compared to the old terminal, where three immigration procedures would typically take about a minute. Murphy emphasized the seamless nature of the new system, allowing passengers to navigate the airport swiftly, granting them more time to enjoy retail amenities or lounge facilities.
The biometric touchpoints in Terminal A currently include auto-enrolment, self-service check-in and bag drop, e-gates, immigration counters, and aircraft boarding gates. Plans are underway to expand these touchpoints to nine in the coming year, extending into retail areas and airport lounges through a loyalty scheme. This expansion aims to offer passengers the option to use their biometric profile for a smoother experience in various areas, including duty-free shopping and car rentals.
The new terminal, covering an impressive 742,000 square meters, houses five main biometric touchpoints, with future plans to add more check-in desks, biometric counters for check-in and boarding, and solutions for connecting flights by 2024.
Abu Dhabi Airports collaborates with immigration authorities and other government entities to collect the necessary biometric data of passengers upon entering the country, emphasizing the use of data for operational purposes related to safety and security. The auto-enrolment process, applicable to UAE nationals, residents, and travelers who have passed through any airport in the country in the last seven years, enables passengers to utilize facial recognition for online check-in and self-serve desks.
Four technology companies, including Next50, SITA, Idemia, and Embross, have played pivotal roles in implementing the biometric services at Terminal A. The new terminal, with a capacity to serve up to 45 million passengers annually, accommodates 28 airlines serving 117 destinations and can handle 11,000 passengers per hour, further positioning Abu Dhabi International Airport as a beacon of technological innovation and passenger-centric services.
